It is used to treat severe depression and generalized anxiety disorder
Liver failure, liver cirrhosis, history of mania, kidney failure, history of seizures and closed-angle glaucoma should be used with extreme caution.
Because of the potential for increased suicidal ideation early in treatment with this drug, the patient should be closely monitored by relatives.
Concomitant use of this drug with clozapine can lead to an increase in the blood concentration of clozapine and the occurrence of side effects such as seizures. Concomitant use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors should not be used for 14 days after discontinuation of monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Also, monoamine oxidase should be started 7 days after stopping venlafaxine. Concomitant use of this drug with serotonergic drugs may lead to serotonergic syndrome. It increases the prothrombin time and the partial thromboplastin time in patients treated with warfarin. Concomitant use of cimetidine with this drug may lead to increased plasma concentrations of venlafaxine. This interaction is especially important in the elderly, patients with hypertension or liver disorders.
It may take 4 weeks or more to achieve the desired therapeutic effect.
In case of gastrointestinal side effects, the drug can be taken with food.
Discontinuation of the drug should be done gradually and with the advice of a physician.
Caution should be exercised when getting up from a lying or sitting position due to the possibility of dizziness.
Due to visual disturbances, drowsiness, caution should be exercised when driving or performing tasks that require alertness and care.
Because of the increased risk of suicide, especially early in treatment with this drug, relatives and caregivers should report any suspicious changes in the patient’s behavior and worsening of the depression to the physician.
In case of any allergic reaction such as skin rash or urticaria, the doctor should be informed immediately.
