When I was starting out in my corporate career more years ago than I care to remember I had several paths open to me as an entry level person in a new technology department. Before the days of desktop computers companies often used something called ‘timesharing,’ a way to use a larger computer network to analyze and process data at a set fee.
In my senior year in college I was working as an administrative assistant three days a week when I overheard one of the department managers talking about needing someone to learn how to use the new ‘timesharing’ computer terminal.
The minute I overheard the conversation, I felt a little ‘zing’ go up my spine and got a strong intuitive hit that I should volunteer to learn the new method.
So, overcoming my natural shyness, I headed over to the manager and offered to do just that. The funny thing was that he thought he needed somebody who could type really well since a keyboard was involved. Well – as luck would have it I had won the typing award at my high school so he decided to give me a chance.
That simple decision was the start of what became a highly successful career in information technology – and my typing skills (which do come in handy) were the least of my skills needed.
The skill that really brought me success after success during my career was the willingness to trust my intuition and act on what it was telling me.
Fast forward a dozen years and I am a manager at another company working for the corporate technology group when I get asked by the Division Vice President if I can take over a small support role for the International division.
I immediately got that ‘zing’ again and knew this was going to be an important opportunity. He gave me the weekend to think about it and when I asked others in the department about the division I would be supporting I received universally negative feedback. Everything from they were ‘difficult’ people to the work being ‘boring’ to it being a career dead-end.
I have to admit that my analytical left brain had my original enthusiasm on pause while I thought about the opportunity over the weekend but I kept feeling that special energy in my gut that said ‘go for it.’
So I did and over my almost twenty years working for this major division I got to travel the world, make amazing friends and reach heights I had only dreamt of earlier in my career.
“Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” ~~~~Steve Jobs
Your intuitive sense comes from your connection to higher consciousness as well as the wisdom of your heart.
And in a world where you are inundated with information it is more important than ever to be able to hear the still small voice within as a guide to life.
Intuition becomes increasingly valuable in the new information society precisely because there is so much data. ~~~~ John Naisbitt
5 Ways To Use Your Intuition To Achieve Your Career Goals
So here are some ways you can harness your intuition to achieve your career goals.
- Follow your interests – they are keys to your path to success in life. Especially if you are an entrepreneur you need to make sure that your business reflects your passion. When you express your passion through your work in the world you are automatically in service to all.
- Pay attention – when you are aligned with your intuitive knowingness you will receive opportunities that allow your goals to come to fulfillment. Those opportunities might present as new people, new ideas and even new investment that comes to you so you can realize your dreams.
- Write down your nighttime dreams – your nighttime dreams work with your waking consciousness to alert you to opportunities and possible problem areas to achieving what you want. You can set dream intentions to really focus your energy at night around your intuitive awareness. Your dreaming mind is a vast intuitive resource – use it!
- Take action – follow your gut. Gather whatever information you might need but move forward. Your intuition is pulling you towards something that is meant for you so take action daily and you’ll find more and more intuitive ideas will flow to you.
- Have the courage to commit – it can be easy to be discouraged by others’ opinions of what you should do. Realize you can ‘catch’ other people’s fears of change so know that if you follow your intuition you need the courage of your commitment. Make the commitment – you can always refine how you go about what you do as you go along.
As actor Alan Alda says you may just discover yourself in the process:
At times you have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. What you’ll discover will be wonderful. What you’ll discover is yourself. ~~~~Alan Alda
