“We are all wanderers on this earth.
Our hearts are full of wonder, and our souls are deep with dreams.”
Proverb of the Romani People
The Roma, Sinti, Kale, Irish and English walking people each have their own wisdom and particular lifestyle. However, they do share many commonalities. Many Romani are Christians, with denominational allegiances that reflect their countries of origin. Their way of living primarily in their own communities, outside of the mainstream, can give us something positive and concrete to visualize. And it may be something we wish to emulate.
We in the Western world are inspired by people that use magic and mysticism accurately and successfully. And we can bring these important expressions of love in our own lives. Moving outside of our comfort zone and into a lifestyle of wonder, expressing the poetry of our soul.
The magic of the Romani people includes working with divination and the elements, creating magical charms, and making spells for animal protection and wellness. Shirley Two Feathers reminds us that these traditions use simple spells and rituals to harness the power of nature, and of the elemental spirits that are all around us.
The Romani style of dress is still outside of mainstream culture. Perhaps one of the reasons that their traditions capture our imagination is because they are willing to live their own way. For those of us who want to follow our inner north star, it gives us hope when we see others can and do live well outside of the “norm”. And it proves that there are many ways of living and not one true right way.
The Romani continue to resist many horrific persecutions. The resilience and strength they show through their actions give me hope for humanity.
Another success of these nomadic communities is their contribution to the world of music. Evan Heimlich, in his article Gypsy Americans, tells us that worldwide, people of these cultures are most famous for their contributions as musicians.
Those of Hungarian Slovak descent have played popular Hungarian music. Romani people are credited with creating Flamenco in Spain. Django Rheinhardt is regarded as one of the great jazz guitarists. And Klezmer overlaps with music of Eastern European Rom people.
Mr. Heimlich clarifies important aspects of spirituality by stating it is part of the core of the culture and it is derived from Hindu and Zoroastrian concepts of kintala.
For centuries these people have been lumped together and labeled the derogatory term gypsies; although, some refer do refer themselves as Gypsies, Tinkers and Travellers.
These nomadic people with their rich traditions and deep knowledge and legacy of magic have been maligned and tormented for millennia. To honor these people, we can share accurate information about the benefits of their presence and of their work in our communities.
